Multi
Protocal Label Switching (MPLS) |
|
|
 |
 |
 |

MPLS stands for Multi Protocol Label Switching.
Simply stated, information passed along an MPLS network is forwarded
based on its label. Therefore, forwarding information to the right
destination is both fast and efficient. Network administrators depend
on MPLS to prevent network congestion and to make IP tunnels for VPNs.
One advantage to Multi Protocol Label Switching is that the network
does not require overlays or Layer 2 technology.
In short, MPLS is beneficial, because it allows:
- Network administrators to relieve network congestion by rerouting
traffic
- Multiple layering to be avoided
- Peace of mind by letting administrators create IP tunnels without
encrypting them
